Video: 1970 Camaro LS7 Sleeper “Junk”

When a car pulls next to you at a stoplight with a chrome blower, big exhaust pipes, and a recently-polished red paint job, you know it’s fast. When it’s rusty green with mismatched color panels and a Line-X coated roof, you’d never expect it to be.

This 1970 Camaro is powered by an LS7, and is nicknamed “Junk.” It is definitely a true sleeper. The way it looks, is far from representative of the way it preforms. “Junk,” looks like it just came out of a field, where it had been sitting uncovered for the last decade or so. It looks like it might be able to get to the store and back with a little luck and a set of jumper cables. In reality, it’s probably faster than almost any other 1970 Chevrolet Camaro on the road.

There is no junk under the hood, everything is has a clean satin finish or a polished shine. With twin 76 mm Precision turbos creating 22-pounds of boost, and 1,700 horsepower, “Junk” exemplifies what it means to be a sleeper. Lull the other car into thinking it’s going to stall at the beginning of the race, only to punch it and prove that it means business.

The fastest “Junk” has traveled is around 171 mph, but we’re told it could easily go faster. In the video, we see it take off after an opponent, a newer Dodge Charger that has already made it most of the way down the track. “Junk” catches up and crosses the line almost perfectly even with the other car, as it clocks in at 161 mph with a time of 8.88 seconds. The race announcer reads the stats and tells us what we already know: “Yes it’s another sleeper.”
