Get the women and children off the streets! When Chevrolet releases the ZL1 monster, you’re going to hear it coming. Call it the Anti-Prius for a lot of different reasons, but nobody’s gonna be stepping out into the crosswalk ahead of this baby. Check out the video below, taken at the Chicago Auto Show.
It’s hard to find a suitable metaphor, but there is little doubt that when the first ZL1 hits Woodward Avenue in earnest, everyone from Pontiac to Ferndale is going to know about it. Aftermarket exhaust manufacturers are going to be hard pressed to come up with a replacement for the factory pipes on this Bowtie – unless you need to quiet it down for some inexplicable reason.
The 2012 Camaro ZL1 takes its inspiration from the hottest and rarest Camaro produced during the first muscle car era. Specially built with an all-aluminum 427cui V8, the original ZL1 Camaro represents the pinnacle of Camaro performance from that time. Chevrolet engineers have taken their inspiration from that legacy and brought it into the 21st century.
The Camaro ZL1’s 6.2L supercharged engine will be manufactured using a deck plating process, typically reserved for custom engine builders. The precision-machining process, applied to the aluminum engine block, helps to maximize engine life, reduce friction between internal components and increase horsepower.
According to GM information, the final cylinder honing process brings the engine’s 103.25 mm (4.06 inches) bores to within a tolerance of eight microns or .00031 of an inch. The ZL1’s supercharged engine is expected to produce at least 550 horsepower (410 kW, in Communist). Turn your speakers up, or your headphones down!
