As is always the case when a new high-performance vehicle arrives on the scene, people have proven eager to line up any and everything they can think of at the 2016 Chevy Camaro SS. Powered by the same potent LT1 engine that makes 455 horsepower in the Chevy Corvette, the all-new Camaro is promising new levels of performance for enthusiasts.
It’s one thing to claim to be fast though, and another thing to prove it, and one of the early bosses of the new muscle car era is the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Fitted with four-wheel drive and a 470 horsepower HEMI V8 engine, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a literal heavyweight when it comes to drag racing, and can give a number of performance cars a run for their money.
Indeed, as the video above shows, that four-wheel drive proves to be a big boon right off the starting line, allowing the much heavier Jeep to take an early lead on the lighter, but rear-wheel drive, 2016 Camaro. By the time the two cars reach the first flag marker, the Camaro has already closed the gap and is well on its way to leaving the SRT8 behind. Not exactly surprising when you consider that the SRT8 has a curb weight of over 5,100 pounds..
In the end, it’s the 2016 Camaro SS by a couple of car lengths at least despite both cars being stock, although the real treat in this video is the unfettered roar of the LT1 engine. That, and the crisp shifting combine to add that audible ambience that makes a muscle car what it is.
