Brian Hobaugh is no stranger to the performance car world, nor is he a stranger to the popular world of autocross. In fact, last year we showcased one of Hobaugh’s famous autocross cars on our sister site ChevyHardcore.com. But the well-known ’73 Camaro that Hobaugh has raced for years isn’t the only performance car he has sitting in his garage, or the only autocross beast for that matter. Check out the performance Chevy that passed the autocross passion down to Hobaugh from his father in the latest episode of Big Muscle above.
The 1965 Corvette that Hobaugh and his father both autocross on a regular basis is unbelievable, not just because it’s one of the only wide-body Corvettes we’ve ever caught on the autocross course or because of the massive amount of power the 364ci stroker motor between its front fenders produces, but because of the history that the car holds.
Purchased new in 1965, the Corvette was bought specifically for autocross competitions and modified accordingly by the original owner. Every year since, the Corvette has seen plenty of autocross action through the hands of three different owners. In 1983, Hobaugh’s father purchased the car to continue his own autocross passion. It has been in the Hobaugh family ever since.
Set up with every sort of autocross advantage in mind, the Corvette is one heck of a stunner with 315 series tires wrapped around massive 18-inch deep dish wheels tucked under giant fender flares. Under the hood, the 364ci stroker motor produces 500 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque that gets pushed to the pavement via a full autocross suspension system. Inside the car, you’ll find nothing but old-school charm as the Corvette still maintains its original gauge setup perfect for performance readings even 40+ years after it was produced.
Hobaugh is a force to be reckoned with on the autocross course, whether he’s behind the wheel of his ’73 Camaro or his ’65 Sting Ray. And with his daughter set to get her drivers’ permit soon, we can’t wait to see what three generations of autocross enthusiasts accomplish with the Corvette in the future!
