These days automakers have plenty of options for building buzz about a new car. They can launch a viral video campaign, do a nationwide test drive event, or give a few examples away through various social media mediums like Facebook or Twitter. But perhaps one of the most effective ways to get word out about a new car is to simply let a celebrity drive it, and then gush over it.
That’s pretty much the entire premise of Jay Leno’s Garage, where the former talk show host now spends his “retirement” test driving custom show cars and brand new production models alike. This time it’s the 640 horsepower Cadillac CTS-V that swings by Leno’s Garage, along with Cadillac Chief Engineer David Leone, who helps Jay hype up the new hyper-Caddy.
To be sure, Leno is a big Cadillac fan, and along with a wide array of classics, he is also the proud owner of a 540 horsepower Cadillac CTS-V coupe from the previous generation. With the new Cadillac already boasting a 100 horsepower advantage over its predecessor though, we knew it wouldn’t be long before the all new model made its way to his SoCal shop. Leno gets particularly patriotic in regards to watching Cadillac take on Germany’s luxury automakers, so it’s no surprise that he falls in love almost immediately.
Of course before getting to the CTS-V, Lenone has to talk about the 464 horsepower ATS-V. If you want to hear a discussion about both vehicles’ mechanical merits, stick around for the first half of the video. If you’re like us and just want to get Jay’s driving impressions, skip on ahead to about the 14 minute mark. It doesn’t take long for Leno to get on the gas pedal (losing a GoPro camera in the process), and though less raucous than most of his test drives, you can tell that the former Tonight Show host is really into the drive.
For a guy that usually has a lot to say, seeing him fixated on the road ahead says a lot.
