Video: This Trailblazer SS is Currently the Cam-Only Record Holder

Since the LS1 was released in 1997, car enthusiasts have been actively trying to break records for certain categories with their vehicles. All-motor, cam-only, power adder, drag radial, slicks, whatever – there’s no shortage of drag racing record categories for LS enthusiasts. There’s no exception for the Trailblazer SS crowd, either.

Wade Rhodes is one such owner, but he’s not just any Trailblazer SS enthusiast. He’s currently the number two guy on the naturally-aspirated record holder list, and is sitting on top of the mountain of the cam-only Trailblazer SS class, producing a best time slip of 11.667 at 116.44 in the 1/4-mile.

So how did Rhodes pull it off? Well the long block is left entirely stock, with a FAST LSXrt 102 MM intake manifold and Nick Williams matching throttle body, replacing the restrictive, truck-style setup. The factory camshaft was swapped out for a Vengeance Racing custom grind that specs in at 235/239, .624/.624 lift, and a 114 LSA.

Helping the SUV’s LS2 breathe is a Haines Motorsports 4-inch custom fender well cold-air intake, attached to a Colorado MAF with a 4-inch MAF housing. Expelling the exhaust gases is set of Kooks 1-7/8-inch headers, and a Magnaflow muffler.

Pumping fuel into the cylinders are a set of 42-lb. injectors, while a Ron Davis radiator, a set of LS1 electric fans and a 160-degree thermostat keep everything cool under the hot summer operating temperatures. The tuning is kept is check with a Blue Thunder 2 Racing program, and the truck runs on 110 octane.

There are other mods too, some of which help the Trailblazer hook off of the line, while many others are intended to put the near-5,000 pound SUV on a diet. It’s been almost four years of trial and tribulation with this Trailblazer, but Rhodes persisted, coming out on top!
