YouTuber Gets First Ride In C8 Corvette Convertible

Lately, GM has gone far away from soapy dealership windows to build anticipation to help promote their newest offerings. Using the power of the internet, the marketing folks at GM have reached out to those who speak directly to the younger crowd via venues like YouTube. This latest juncture features a lucky ‘Tuber known as “Speed Phenom”.

If GM asked you to ride shotgun to a Cars and Coffee event in their new C8 Corvette Convertible, you’d do it, right? Well, here’s your newest hero. The ride wasn’t long, and speeds were well within town limits, but there was some throttle-blipping goodness to be had.

While there is no shortage of folks who would love to have the opportunity, it was Speed Phenom’s lucky number that came up. Who wouldn’t jump at such an opportunity? Of course, there are a few things that we’re sure needed to be clicked off by GM’s legal department before this ever became a reality. Some are simply preliminaries. But, when you’re talking about all the power potential of a vehicle such as the new, mid-engine Corvette, they can become more akin to a 10-pound ball and chain on a chihuahua.

Keen eyes will note that there isn’t a plate on the vehicle. So, lengthy, scenic drives are out of the question. That is unless you enjoyed your one and only opportunity to enjoy an up-close and personal look at any GM captured-fleet vehicle ever again. Plus, any interactions with the local constabulary are entirely upon you. Yep, GM will get their vehicle back, and you’ll have a range of tax-payer benefiting receipts to look back on to remember the moment. Oh, and you may not get another chance to enjoy another GM vehicle, but enough on that.

So, Chad and Mr. Phenom take the car to the event with the top up. Then, they proceed to answer the question that was on everyone's mind by tossing it in the trunk at the event - in under 16 seconds, we might add. Of course, the ride "home" could only be undertaken with the top stowed away.

To ensure that things were kept well on the lawyer’s side of the fence, our lucky ‘Tuber was confined to the passenger’s side of the vehicle. Which makes sense, especially since a media professional stuffed one of their Sixth-Generation Camaros into a wall during its big reveal due to focusing more on his on-camera persona than his driving.

The main thing is, Chevrolet wants to get the word out on their newest creation, and in today’s world, there are more ways to do that. In “the good old days”, folks would flock to dealerships to experience the new car for the first time. Today, throngs of overburdened wallets walk around outside of the dealer’s lots and GM wants to get their attention as well.

The car arrived at the event and was subsequently mobbed. A short announcement as they entered the event was the only warning anyone received that the car was going to be in attendance.

So, Mr. Phenom somehow wrangles a ride in a new, no-plate C8, specially-delivered to the Cars and Coffee in San Clemente. He meets up with Chad, the car’s handler, as the car is being unloaded from the hauler. Of course, Chad does all the driving.

“Speed” sums up the moment by saying, “to experience what it’s like to sit in the car, while it’s moving.” Very few have experienced that yet, and fewer still have the channel or the subscribers to prove it. So, what IS it like to “sit in the car while it’s moving?” We can’t tell you, because we’re not Chad, Mr. Phenom, or anyone else who’s ever sat in one of these beauties under any sort of speed. Maybe one day that’ll change, but for now, we not-so-secretly envy folks like these who do get the opportunity! And until that changes, we’ve got this video to hold us over.
