It takes a lot to turn heads at a Drive OPTIMA event, but a wild 1968 Porsche 912 recently did just that. Dubbed the World’s Wildest Porsche 912 in a social media post by Ultimate Street Car Association, the car looks like a vintage classic but hides a modern secret. Underneath the classic lines, the builder created a machine with one purpose: to compete with the best.
A V8 Heart in a Porsche 912 Body
The car’s owner, Christopher Ramey, completely reimagined the classic German sports car. The original, modest four-cylinder engine is long gone. In its place sits a 468-cubic-inch, normally aspirated LS V8 that sends an incredible 660 horsepower to the rear wheels.
A Porsche 6-speed transaxle channels all that massive power—a smart choice that helps maintain some of the car’s original balance while being strong enough to handle the V8’s torque.
American Bones Underneath
To make the car handle as well as it accelerates, Christopher ditched the original 1960s suspension. The entire chassis now rides on a full C5 Corvette suspension setup. This popular and effective swap provides the car with modern suspension geometry, offering a huge upgrade in grip, stability, and control.
It’s a proven combination that transforms the vintage chassis into a serious contender, ready for the varied challenges of an OPTIMA event.
A Weekend of Double Victories
Christopher Ramey’s weekend at Laguna Seca proved his car wasn’t just there to turn heads; it was there to win. The unique Porsche was a massive success, earning two separate victories.
Ramey not only took home the prestigious Anderson Composites Competitor’s Choice award, an honor voted on by his fellow drivers, but he also secured the overall win in the competitive GTL Class.
A Truly One-Off Build
This Porsche 912 is the definition of a custom-built machine that combines classic style with a potent, all-out V8 and proven American suspension components. The owner summed it up perfectly, stating, “It is a unique one-off.”
While surrounded by more expensive and exotic machinery, Christopher seemed right at home, ready to see what his creation could do. “Happy to be here at Optima and hopefully it’ll do a thing,” he said.
His build is a perfect example of the creativity and passion that drives the pro-touring world, proving that a unique vision can create a car that’s wilder than anything you can buy off a showroom floor.
