We’re only at the midway point of this year’s Cadillac Challenge Series, presented by Toyo Tires and the D3 Cadillac Tuning Program. Early last month, the Caddys took to what has been called “The Fastest Track on the West Coast” – the famous Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California for Round 5.
In Class C1, Ed Wagner made a surprise move to class C2 in his white CTS-V, seemingly leaving the track wide-open for current class leader Steve Collins. However, a few new faces Rex Rexford and Jarrod Weymar made it their mission to keep Collins off the podium. Weymar posted a respectable 1:50.296 in his 1st Gen CTS-V, before retiring early due to steering problems. Rexford and Collins went nose to nose, with Collins posting a winning time of 1:39.191, just a short 0.774 seconds ahead f Rexford. Collins extends his sizeable points lead in C1, and a second place for Rexford moves him into a tie with Sam Lollar for second in points.
In Class C2, WPA Racing was coming off their recent victory at Infineon, but still chasing points leader Team Special K. There were also a few new comers to C2, including Ed Wagner moving up from C1 and fresh face Hector L. Thanks to a few “additional upgrades” and a set of sticky Toyo R888’s, Ed Wagner was able to pull off a huge under-dog victory in C2 over both WPA and Team Special K by posting a blazing 1:38.364 lap time early that wouldn’t be outdone. In our opinion, C2 is really the class to keep your eye on in the Cadillac Challenge Series.
In C3, the epic battle between Team HeaVyweight and the D3 Legionnaire raged on. Bob Michaels yet again definitively piloted the Team HeaVyweight CTS-V to victory with a best lap time of 1:37.081, bettering James Gill’s best time in the D3 Legionnaire by 1.7 seconds. The win further lengthened HeaVyweight’s points lead in the class.
We're halfway through the 2012 Cadillac Challenge Series, and times are dropping and rivalries are heating up...
