Tech Review: Advanced Tuning and Readouts With A Superchips SCR

The second generation of On Board Diagnostics (OBDII) was a massive jump forward for standardization and capability over its predecessors. With such requirements, all makes and models now had a common ground with a common set of DTCs. Today’s engines are being run by highly sophisticated computer systems that monitor an amazing amount of information as you drive; many of which are not present in your gauge cluster.

Enter Superchips and the Redline in-cabin tuner with real time read outs. In-cabin tuners were originally tasked for diesel applications in, mostly, trucks. However, it wasn’t long before they were put to good use with the new technologies of other non-diesel late model applications. The Superchips Redline (SCR) unit was specifically designed for these vehicles and comes fully loaded with the tune options built-in.

It’s easy to select from multiple power levels to provide varying levels of horsepower and torque increases based on what fuel you are putting in the vehicle.  Each tune is specifically engineered across the entire RPM range to provide better output increases as well as overall drivability. Most vehicles can also adjust the top speed, rev limiters, and transmission shift points and firmness. Some vehicles, such as our test Camaro, can also recalibrate for axle gear ratio changes while most every car can also recalibrate the speedometer for tire and wheel changes.

The customizable display fits in smoothly into the Camaro’s interior and provides vital information for the driver.

The SCR becomes an integral part of your everyday driving. Not only does it read and clear engine codes, it also has hundreds of sensor read-out combinations to view, fully customizable so you change and view the information you actually want to see. The background is even fully customizable to add even more personal touch. An EAS accessory is also available to tap into even more data that may not already be monitored by your vehicle’s on-board computer.  A data logging program is included in the unit for better information tracking as you begin to fine tune your car.

The included MyStyle application also allows owners to update their SCR, and customize the background screen to match different interior treatments.

Thinking ahead, Superchips has built the SCR for the long haul. They specifically built the unit so the program can easily be updated when needed with firmware or software upgrades. Vehicle manufacturers also do updates over the years and the SCR can handle and optimize those as well.

Installation

Installation is a breeze. After unpacking the unit, all you have to do is plug it in to the OBDII port, route the wire and stick the suction cup to the windshield then adjust the positioning to your liking. The initial tune gets downloaded extremely fast, usually in less than a couple minutes. This speed is part of what makes real-time data read-outs possible.

Installation is quick and easy with the included high quality Arkon windshield mount and OBDII connector.

We strapped our 6.2L LS3 Camaro down to our Dynojet dyno prior to installing the kit for a baseline stock run. Max horsepower came out at 367.34 and the max torque peaked out at 368.78 lb-ft for our stock Camaro SS base numbers.

For our application we started with the level 1 tune setup for 91 octane as we’re just getting this bad boy broken in (stay tuned as of course we’ll get crazier as we go). After the lightning fast SCR installation and flash, we spun up our dyno again to reach a max horsepower of 375.01 hp and 381.59 lb-ft scoring almost an extra 8 horsepower and an impressive 12.81 lb-ft of torque. The horsepower had significant gains in other spots throughout the power band – for example, at 5400 RPM we saw gains of 11.56 hp.

One of the quickest loading tunes we've ever used, the flash took less than a minute to complete. On our dyno test, the tuner provides up to nearly 12 horsepower and almost 13 lbs-ft of torque under the curve.
