When the 2010 Camaro first hit the market, it was missing two major options; a convertible, and T-tops. GM is slated to unveil the 2011 Camaro Convertible next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, though aftermarket shops have been doing the conversions for over a year. So what about that T-top version that was so popular back in the 80’s and 90’s?
Well GM may not be offering it, but Drop Top Customs is. The kit, which retails for $6,500 according to Camaro5, includes undercarriage reinforcement and two body-color T-tops with a very high-quality look to the whole package.
The first American car to have T-tops was the 1968 Chevy Corvette. The T-top version of the Corvette became even more popular than the convertible, eventually leading to the cancellation of the ragtop Corvette in 1975, which didn’t not return until 1986. T-tops first appeared on the Camaro in 1978 (just in time for Smokey and the Bandit) and ran all the way through the final 4th generation model in 2002.
It is interesting that GM decided to not bring T-tops back with the 2010 Camaro, though it may have had something to d0 with the pending insolvency GM was going through at the time. This kit promises no flex problems, thanks to the undercarriage supports. It is unclear if the $6,500 just includes the kit or installation as well, but this kit looks great to us. But of course taste is individual so it’s really up to you – how do you rank this T-top conversion kit?
