Last year GM rolled out the all-new Cadillac ATS, the first car built on the General’s new Alpha platform. This rear-drive platform underpins what Cadillac executives hopes will be a BMW 3-series fighter for the new millenium, though so far we’ve not heard about any variants designed to broaden the appeal of this sporty sedan.
However, Automotive News reports that GM revealed plans for a two-door Cadillac ATS to dealers at a Las Vegas event recently, even showing off a few pictures of the new car. GM hopes the ATS sans two doors will attract a younger crowd.
And they might be onto something. Today’s young new car buyers (the few that are out there) are increasingly looking for a car that is both comfortable, spacious, yet sporty. The Cadillac ATS is all three things, true, but the lack of a coupe option could send buyers looking into another brand. Cadillac hopes to draw in young buyers with the coupe model, which also leaves us wondering what other variants GM might plan.
Naturally we are inclined to think a Cadillac ATS shooting brake/wagon could also be in the works, as enthusiasts found the CTS wagon an appealing option, even if sales were only so-so. The Cadillac ATS Coupe will likely offer the 2.0 liter turbo and 3.6 liter V6 engine found in the sedan model, and a hotter V version with the twin-turbo V6 is rumored to be in the works as well.
As long as we get our two-door Cadillac though, we’ll be happy with just about anything under the hood.
