It was only a matter of time before GM trotted out a supercharged version of the 5th generation Camaro, and the ZL1 does not disappoint. 550 horsepower, 550 ft-lbs of torque, and what is sure to a serious corner-carving suspension. But words and pictures only go so far. Drivers need to feel, they need to touch, and perhaps most importantly, they need to hear and be heard.
That is exactly what Camaro fans had a chance to do at Camaro5 Fest II, a gathering of Camaro faithful. GM was nice enough to show up with the ZL1, and give fans a chance to hear this beast in person. One attendee was even kind enough to post clips (one NSFW due to an F-bomb at the end) of the exhaust to YouTube, and it sounds Mmm Mmm good.
The first clip just shows the ZL1 slowly cruising down the track, revving the motor (not too high) at slow speed. The importance of a car’s exhaust note cannot be understated, and it is perhaps the most appealing part of owning a muscle car. But while it is up to the individual to determine how loud and obnoxious they want to go, GM has to provide an exhaust system that complies with government regulations and doesn’t blow your ear drums out every time you goose it.
After hearing the supercharged 6.2 liter V8 up close in this second (NSFW) clip, we’re pretty sure that GM hit the nail on the head. We do wish the drivers had given the attendees a nice smokey burnout, but they were surely under orders from corporate to refrain from any hoonage behind the wheel of this 550 horsepower Camaro. The rest of us won’t show the same restraint, that’s for sure.
