We meandered by GT Performance‘s display at SEMA and were wowed by their selection of bitchin’ steering wheels. It was not unlike a candy store with delights that were a beauty to behold.
What really grabbed us, though, was the absolutely killer version of the classic (yet somewhat reviled) Chevy four-spoke steering wheel. It became well known on Vegas and Camaros in the early ’70s and there wasn’t much commotion until it showed up on the 1976 Corvette and then all hell broke loose.
It was much derided–which was too bad–because it was smaller and meatier than the skinny rim wheel it replaced and was a much better object to hold. Sadly, it went over like the proverbial turd in a punch bowl.
Well, the fix is finally in 40 years later … Check out GT Performance’s version of the old Chevy 4-spoke wheel. It’s lovingly crafted and offers 1976 Corvette (and Camaro, Malibu and Vega, too) owners a very nice alternative.
“Since 1932, the GT marque has established the standard for performance vehicles worldwide and 80 years later, it’s in our DNA. The name ‘GT Performance’ marque will continue this fine tradition in the true spirit of performance products.”
GT Performance might be a new name in steering wheels, but it’s not new to the business. The “Steering Wheel Experts” at GT have over 40 years’ experience in steering wheel design and manufacturing.
