Last week we brought you 2024 70/SS Chevelle news with two new options for the highly-anticipated revival of the iconic 1970 Chevy Chevelle Super Sport. Buckle up, we have more to reveal.
At our last check-in, the Trans Am Worldwide team was hard at work on the hardtop 70/SS Chevelle-based remake with an upcoming engineering meeting on the schedule. Here we get an update on that progress and first look at the renderings. But that’s not all. We also learn what’s really underneath the removable hardtop.
“We decided on latches and location,” shared Tod Warmack, Director and Co-Founder of Trans Am Worldwide. “That’s all we were waiting on to finish the design on the headliner.”
The modern Chevelle visionary explained the hardtop would be affixed with three mechanical latches; one in the front and two in the rear. The CAD designs are complete, and the coupe-style 70/SS Chevelle re-creation is well on its way.
“The next step is the CNC to cut the positive of the exterior top and the interior headliner,” Warmack added. “From that, the mold will be developed. The glass has been sourced and it is all custom to match the look of the original Chevelle.”
The 70/SS Hardtop Conceals A Bonus
A hidden component on the reimagined, modern 70/SS sits below the removable hardtop. It is a soft top. Why a second top? Well, the double-top is the ultimate in high-end preparation.
Just imagine – you’re cruising topless down the highway in your 70/SS when a sudden rain shower hits. Your removable hardtop is in the garage and you’re watching raindrops start to soak into the carpet on your floorboard and puddle in the indentions of your leather seat stitching. You wish you had the luxury of a traditional ragtop to deploy immediate shelter, shielding your new 70/SS from the elements.
Trans Am Worldwide figured there was no need to wish. They’ve got their customers covered. Their 70/SS incorporates a covert convertible ragtop below the removable hardtop. It is like the Trojan horse of droptops.
“We’ve designed it so when the hardtop is in place, it disengages the ability to activate the soft top; but when the hardtop is not in place, one hit of a button and it will engage the soft top to close,” Warmack stated.
Viola, shelter is only one touch away. This current convenience wasn’t even dreamt of back when the original 1970 Chevelle SS came off the line. Today, it is just one more available option as the 2024 70/SS is resurrected as a modern revision of the iconic Chevelle for a whole new generation of muscle car fans.
