When it comes to corner carving, one of the best upgrades you can make to a car’s suspension system is upgrading to the springs and dampers. Even better is swapping to a set of coilovers. A coilover is a spring and damper combination, which usually allows for height adjustment, and in some cases, even damping and rebound adjustment.
Companies like UMI Performance provide enthusiasts with high-performance aftermarket solutions, like the company’s coilover system specifically designed for the ’93-’02 F-body GM cars.
The package utilizes high-quality springs manufactured by Draco, a well-known oval track spring manufacturer. UMI also worked with AFCO in a collaborative effort to design and supply the double adjustable shocks. The dampers feature a UMI Performance custom-valved setup which favors autocross, road racing, and time attack applications. The standard package includes a 550 pound spring rate, with over 60 different adjustability options for the damping of the shock and strut combinations — allowing the end-user to fine-tune the complete coilover system for varying conditions.
Ramey Womer, of UMI Performance, explains how the system works for F-body applications. He says, “We’ve worked directly with AFCO to design and engineer the most capable coilover system to-date, and with well-known autocross racer Sam Strano to help us custom-tune and consult us on what F-body owners truly want. Strano put hundreds of test miles on the components both at the autocross and in street driving and continued making recommendations until he was satisfied with the product. This input from a multi-time SCCA championship driver has allowed the dampers to incorporate an immense amount of adjustability for just about every road racing application available. This coilover system is a complete bolt-in application, requiring no permanent modification — and is even compatible with the factory A-arms on F-body cars.”
The coilover package also includes the company’s bearing mounts, which are designed to provide zero deflection while handling high-loads to create the ultimate reliability in a coil-over system. For more information on this coilover package, check out UMI Performance’s website.
