The muscle car wars have gotten hotter and hotter in the past few years, with Ford, GM, and Chrysler all duking it out for rear-drive supremacy. While much ado is being made of the upcoming 2015 Ford Mustang, which gives Blue Oval fans an all-new platform to play with, that has done little to help sales of the soon-to-be-replaced Mustang.
Combined with a front and rear-end refresh of the 2014 Camaro, sales of the Chevy muscle car soared in august, up almost 33% over August 2012 reports GM Authority. This has put the Camaro in a commanding lead, once again outpacing Mustang sales in annual sales. Can the lead hold?
No doubt there are a number of Mustang buyers holding onto their money in anticipation of the 2015 Mustang, which promises a new look, new engines, blah blah blah. For all the talk of Mustang this and Mustang that, Camaro sales have consistently outpaced Ford’s pony car this year. August was an especially sobering month for Mustang sales, with the Camaro selling 8,875 to the Mustang’s 5,866 units.
But not only did the Camaro blow Mustang sales out of the water, it even beat itself. Sales in August 2013 were up 32.96% compared to August of 2012, and year-to-date Camaro sales have tallied 59,146 units so far in 2013. The Mustang hasn’t even broken 55,000 sales yet.
If Camaro sales can stay over 8,000 units per month from now until December, GM might even break the 84,391 Camaros sold in 2012. That’d be a nice welcome mat for the 2015 Mustang to the muscle car wars 2.0.
