Heard Of Super F? If You Race An Automatic Transmission, Look Here!

You may have been following along with the complete build of Dragzine’s project car, BlownZ, which is owned by Power Automedia’s founder James Lawrence, and raced on the West Coast in the NMCA West’s 275 Drag Radial class along with PSCA and WCHRA action. The car, which has been a long-term project build, has been a “make-it-into-the-7’s-or-bust” proposition, and recently achieved the feat at the NMCA West Pomona event with plenty of room to spare – a 7.69 at 181 MPH run during qualifying, backed up with a 7.86 in the first round of eliminations.

There have been a lot of trials and tribulations during the course of the build, but one of the things that James has been very pleased with has been the performance of the transmission, and he’s quick to credit the Super F transmission fluid from ATI Performance Products. Type F fluid was originally formulated for Ford automatic transmissions like the C4 and C6 back in the 1960’s, and was designed to meet particular performance requirements for special frictional characteristics, transmission cleanliness, and low-temperature pumpability.

zUp until now, there hasn’t been an aftermarket synthetic equivalent to the Type F fluid, but thanks to the efforts of ATI and Driven Racing Oils (who produces the oil for ATI), there’s a solution. The ATI Super F Transmission Fluid offers consistent shifting, superior heat dissipation, and long-life characteristics over traditional petroleum-based fluid. We spoke with Driven’s Lake Speed, Jr., who explained some of the advantages to the Super F.

“The key thing about Type F-style fluid is that it prevents slip in the transmission. If there’s slip in the transmission, then you’re not transferring the power to the rear wheels. You want a good crisp gear change to keep the tire grip and acceleration optimized – that way you’re not chasing it. With this fluid you remove the variable. Consistent shift performance is what these guys are hunting for and that’s what the synthetic Super F gives you,” he explained.

It works in all popular Ford, GM, and Mopar racing automatics: Powerglide, TH350 and TH400, C4, C6, and the Torqueflite 904 and 727 can all benefit from the use of Super F.
