LS3-Powered Mazda Miata Gets The Juice From Nitrous Outlet

The word Miata doesn’t usually strike fear into the hearts of competitors. Sure, these nimble little cars are quick on a road course, and most racers who have experience with these import love them. But the lack of power from the four-cylinder engine leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you want to go drag racing. Fortunately, the LS-swap completely transforms these lightweight vehicles into rocket ships.

Formato’s LS3-powered Miata cranked out some serious power on the rollers with the help of Nitrous Outlet.

Jeremy Formato, the owner of Fasterproms, has an LS3-swapped that makes 530 horsepower at the wheels. While this might be enough power for most, Formato was looking to stretch the numbers out a little more. Instead of doing a turbo or supercharger, he decided to go back to his roots and install a Nitrous Outlet nitrous system with all of the bells and whistles.

Nitrous system technology has come a long way over the past few years. What was once a simple on and off operation is now controlled by advanced electronics. For instance, progressive units like Nitrous Outlets Pro Max can customize nitrous activation in several ways and parameters. The Pro Max can control two stages independently of each other with built-in 70 amp solenoid drivers. It also offers closed-loop fueling options with wideband input when used as a single stage. And the features don’t stop there. You can store up to five different tune-ups, data log, multi-gear lockout function, two ignitions retard options, and much more.

The ProMax progressive controller had a touch screen and is easily tuned right from the driver’s seat. It also data logs and does numerous things to control the nitrous system.

In the video, Formato runs through some of these settings to give you an idea of the ProMax’s functionality before making a hit on the nitrous. One of our favorite things about this controller is the adjustable nitrous ramp. You can dial in a percentage of the horsepower setting and ramp it according to your needs. The ProMax accomplishes this task by pulsing the solenoids, giving you a smooth transition of power. This process works great on the street or a slick track, and you can even load up to five different tunes that can be selected with a push of the screen. We are just touching the surface of what the ProMax can do as well.

With the Miata on the dyno, Formato makes a few pulls as they change the settings and adjust the fuel jet for the nitrous system to get the air-to-fuel ratio where he wants it. When he’s happy with the results, the car makes its first full pull and lays down 697 horsepower and a massive 666 lb-ft or torques to the wheels. Keep in mind that this little car only weighs 2,500-pounds so its definitely going to be a rocket.

After the dyno session, Formato takes the Miata for a spin first off the bottle, then on. When he activates the system for the first time, the car spins and skates around even in third gear on drag radials. Formato then pulls over and changes the ramp on the system, allowing the Mazda to get traction. You can tell that the car is a blast to drive by Formato’s reaction, and the nitrous system is easily find tuned right from the driver’s seat.
