Will 2023 Camaro ZL1 Take Flight With Blackwing Bits?

You’d think with all the dire reports of the end of the Camaro as we know it, Chevy would freeze any improvement or investment to the endangered car and adopt a holding pattern until it is either euthanized or reconfigured as an EV, see the Mustang Mach-E as a blueprint. Not a cheery outlook for us Camaro fans.

Hold on though, there might be a ray of sunshine. We recently brought a story on the new Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing super sedan, and there seems to be a consensus on the interwebs that the Camaro (which shares GM’s excellent Alpha 2 architecture with the CT5) could borrow Blackwing hardware from the Wreath and Crest division, contradicting the notion that the 6th generation Camaro will be left to wither on the vine.

If this is true, here’s what we might expect. According to Motor Trend, the 2023 Camaro could get more horsepower, bigger brakes, and the latest Magnetic Ride Control via Cadillac.

The latest LT4 in the CT5-V Blackwing makes 668 horsepower, a slight increase from 650hp from the current top-of-the-line motor in the current ZL1, and the Caddy mill would be an easy bolt-in upgrade. As long as the parts bins are available for sharing, the Blackwing’s optional carbon-ceramic brakes could be pilfered as well. Whether these monster Brembo brakes will be an option or incorporated into a go-fast package is speculation at this point.

GM is on the fourth generation of its groundbreaking Magnetic Ride Control, introduced on the C8 Corvette. Already an excellent road car, the latest version of MRC has faster reaction times and would be a welcome improvement.

If this internet scuttlebutt is true, the last iteration of the Camaro will be tweaked and massaged all the way to the end-of-line.  Who cares if the Camaro’s sales have waned in recent years, its still our pick of the litter (herd?) when it comes to pony cars.  Get ’em while they’re hot.
